A piece of history is up for sale in the city of Green.
The 1890 East Liberty Schoolhouse is on the market and the city is accepting bids until Dec. 15. The schoolhouse, now located on Arlington Road, was formerly on state Route 619 before being moved late last year by the city to make way for a new Circle K. Moving the schoolhouse was a nine month process and it cost the city approximately $250,000.
The schoolhouse is one of two German-style schoolhouses in Ohio that are known to still exist.
The school served students in the East Liberty area until just after Thanksgiving in 1927 when a new larger school opened just up the road. Several other uses of the schoolhouse took place before it was purchased by the Square family in 1956 and became Square’s Home Furnishing.
During an Oct. 27 meeting, the city Historic Preservation Commission designated the schoolhouse as a local historic landmark. This designation comes in addition to nine other structures in the city which are historic landmarks.
Green Mayor Gerard Neugebauer said placing the local historic landmark status on the building is a big step for the structure.
Anyone interested in the property must submit a minimal $100,000 bid along with a statement of what the building will be used for. A water line has been connected to the building and sanitary sewer is available along Arlington Road. There is no gas or electric run to the building, but both are available.
City of Green Planning Director Wayne Wiethe said the city is also trying to get the schoolhouse listed on the National Historic Register so a future owner could apply for historic tax credits to make improvements to the building. The city has placed some historic restrictions on the property such as council must approve any changes a new owner would seek on the outside of the building.
“I just hope someone can be creative, that would be great” Wiethe said.
Wiethe said the city will review all the bids and make a decision after reviewing them.
